Job Description

SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:

We are seeking a high-energy, creative, and knowledgeable elementary music teacher who will positively impact student success through building positive rapport and effective instruction of PreK - 6th grade students. 


As well as collaborating with staff for arts integration, the Music Teacher will prepare and plan daily lessons, critique student performance and monitor student progress, along with implementing daily classroom lessons. The Music Teacher will communicate regularly with parents and meet with parents concerning student behavior and progress. This person will demonstrate responsible classroom discipline and be a good steward of musical equipment, instruments and supplies. PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Direct all Music related activities, instruct general music classes; collaborate with all staff for arts integration, ensure compliance with all state and district requirements, and be dedicated to offering all students the opportunity to thrive.


WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and plan daily lessons for PreK-6th grade classes
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress and provide appropriate reteaching and differentiation strategies.
  • Collaborate with other school staff to implement arts integration in core grade level classrooms.
  • Provide relevant and rigorous instruction.
  • Prepare and lead concerts, performances, and other events as needed
  • Conduct rehearsals and prepare relevant repertoire for student performances
  • Maintain excellent rapport with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Other duties as assigned

“Day In the Life” Overview

On a regular day, as the Elementary Music Teacher, you might:

  • Teach Grade Level Music classes.
  • Evaluate student progress to refine student skill development.
  • Share your musical expertise with other school staff and their students as we implement arts integration into the all core subject classes (Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies)
  • Continue your own personal professional development to develop and hone skills in content area.
  • Oversee ordering of music, method materials, instruments and supplies.
  • Develop materials, lesson plans and documents that support content area needs and district initiatives.
  • Communicate with parents to discuss student behavior and progress.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in music education or a closely related field

Valid Indiana teaching certificate with required endorsements, and/or required training for subject and level assigned or the ability to complete requirements to gain certification (required)

Special Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of all band and orchestra instruments and overall operations of instrumental music program

Ability to manage attendance, grading, planning and organizing lessons, budget, and all other responsibilities typical of teaching middle school band

Ability to interpret school policies, procedures, and data

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Collaborate with grade level staff to share knowledge and expertise of music to help with implementation of arts integration into core subjects

Use district-adopted curriculum in all classes (can use supplemental resources in certain circumstances pending admin approval)

Assist in teaching all student musicians proper ways to care for instruments

Assist with arrangements of transportation for any field trips and performances off campus

Maintain current inventory of all fixed asset instruments and equipment within the department

Maintain accurate records of all instruments

Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences

Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Indiana Department of Ed, current state and national standards, board policies, and administrative regulations

Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and technologies that reflect understanding of learning styles and needs of students assigned

Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing

Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students

Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Sankofa Student Code of Conduct, individual school student handbook

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities

Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers

Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members

Comply with school policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations

Adhere to the school's safety policies and procedures

Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

Other duties as assigned
